Google GDrive

GDrive technology is an effort started by Google to build a system based on network storage technology which would provide seemless access to data from anywhere in the world. Current PC based technology uses local hard disks to store important data like programs, files, photos, bookmarks, cached pages etc. GDrive tries to break free from the typical desktop by providing a platform free technology available over the internet to access data and run applications. The bottleneck today is only the avalibility of bandwidth over the network. Google is working on a realtime system to solve this problem and provide faster access over the internet. The advantages of this technology would be infinite storage space and no use of third party tools to run applications.

Attempts to emulate such a system have been made by using GMail as a mass storage system and using Google applications such as Google Docs to edit data. But such attempts donot provide a full solution and fall short of the real expectations of a truly distributed system running applications over the internet effortlessly. There are many third party extensions which turn GMail into a network device. XMail Hard Drive is one such extension.

Asus EEE PC

Asus EEE PC is a under $400 laptop which Asus has come out with an intention to capture the portable, ultra-portable, child laptop and netbook segment. They seem to have horribly failed at this attempt. For starters, Asus EEE PC has a very small hard disk drive of maximum 8 GB size. The hard disk, which is a solid state drive (SSD) does not compare to the drives offered by other manufactures such as Acer whos Aspire One has a 160 GB SSD drive. Also Acer Aspire One is much cheaper than Asus EEE PC.

The second major flaw with Asus EEE PC is its screen resolution. The graphic display just does not stand-up to other netbooks in its class. Both, Dell Mini 9 and Acer Aspire One have a high resolution 1024X600 9 inch screen and Asus EEE PC has only 800X640 9 inch screen.

The third drawback is the cramped keyboard. The keyboard on other netbooks are also small a bit cramped but usable and ergonic. Asus EEE PC just does not yield to typing effectively.

Asus EEE PC has a very slow processor Intel Celeron M 630 Mhz. Compare this to Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz in Acer Aspire One.

The ram is also low at 512 MB. Other netbooks like Dell mini and Acer Aspire One provie 1 GB ram.

Lastly, Asus EEE PC does not come pre installed with a windows OS which really hinders its reach for the task it is designed namely mobile net connectivity.
